About us

About Octomedia

Octomedia is Australia’s leading B2B media (print, digital & events) platform with a portfolio covering retail, FMCG, small business, franchising and e-commerce. In addition to our media business Octomedia is a key driver in new technologies, with a host of collaborations and proprietary technologies developed for the business.

Octomedia’s titles have run since 1971 and includes Australia’s largest and oldest retail trade publication Inside Retail with daily digital newsletters, websites, news briefs and more. We provide essential knowledge and insight into the trends, issues and events of importance to the retail industry. The bi-monthly magazine attracts quality columnists who are experts in their field. Inside Retail is well known throughout the industry for providing quality, independent journalism, entertaining stories and influential opinions on important issues. Our HQ is in Sydney; our team includes writers, editors, designers, publishers and sales specialists who share a love of publishing. Other staff are based in Melbourne, Hong Kong and the Phillipines.

We always tell the truth as it is, and act clearly and sincerely throughout the communication process. We always provide direct and positive feedback to our readers. We act in a team spirit with our employees and business partners.

We know it takes people with different ideas, strengths, interests, and cultural backgrounds to make our company succeed. We encourage healthy debate and differences of opinion.

Knowledge & Passion
We consider that knowledge, passion and heart are cornerstones of our company and the key to driving our success in effectively serving our readers and offering them the means to fully benefit from our experience and expertise in providing quality retail news. We value the creativity, dedication, courage, and spirit that drive us beyond the ordinary.

History of the group

Octomedia was founded in 2003 following the buyout of the Inside Retailing and Foodweek titles by its two editors from long time owner, Huntley’s Publications. Foodweek was established in the 1960s as a weekly, subscription-based trade publication for the FMCG, grocery, and liquor industries. Inside Retail followed in the 1970s as a weekly trade publication and sister brand, focusing on the retail industry as a whole. These two iconic brands grew in readership over the years, with Inside Retailing changing its name to Inside Retail in 2011. In 2009, following consolidation of both suppliers and retailers in the FMCG and grocery and liquor markets, Foodweek was retired.

Since its founding 46 years ago, Inside Retail’s original product, now known as Inside Retail PREMIUM, has migrated from soft copy to online. In the early 2000s Inside Retail launched online, with a daily newsbrief following soon after. In 2005 the first issue of Inside Retail Magazine, a bi-monthly features-based glossy magazine, was published.

In addition to Inside Retail’s three staple products, Octomedia, also publishes a variety of other publications including the Australian Retail Chain Directory, and the Australian Retail Outlook – a forward looking publication featuring predictions for retail in the year ahead.

An Asian-based sister site to Inside Retail, InsideRetail.Asia, launched in 2010, generating news for the fast growing Asian retail economy, and Inside Shopper, a weekly newsbrief focusing on shopper marketing, the path to purchase, and shopper behaviours came to life in 2013 – this was then transformed into a revived Foodweek and Inside Shopper experience known as InsideFMCG.

Bolstering our portfolio of business-related publications, the acquisition of Inside Small Business in 2015 gave us the opportunity to reach a highly targeted and segmented audience of small enterprises. Inside Small Business was launched in May 2013 by Melbourne’s Summit Publishing as a quarterly print magazine and newsletter. Under Octomedia, ISB continued building an online presence with more breaking news on the latest business trends, extending to digital magazine subscriptions soon after. Inside Small Business looks at how small enterprises can enhance the way they manage operations, resources, staff, marketing, finances and technology to create a more positive and profitable outcome.

One month later, Octomedia acquired a stake in B2B e-commerce news website, Internet Retailing. Founded by Mark Freidin and Nathan Huppatz in 2008, Internet Retailing is Australia’s leading news website for e-commerce retailers. Under Octomedia, the Internet Retailing site has just been redesigned and relaunched with a fresh, reinvigorated layout. InternetRetailing.com.au provides cutting edge news and views on mobile, e-commerce, security and much more.

In 2016, Octomedia acquired industry-leading franchise media Franchise Business. Franchise business provides a comprehensive list of franchised businesses for sale, in-depth brand profiles, extensive advice and essential guide to buying a franchise in Australia. Under Octomedia, Inside Franchise Business, formerly Franchising magazine freshened up the content of the bi-monthly magazine. As a leading consumer magazine Inside Franchise Business delivers advice, business opportunities, industry overviews, trends and profile articles to generations of readers looking for key insights as they progress towards buying a business.

Today Octomedia has five industry publications and operates in over six countries. Growth has been rapid from 2014 to 2018, growing from 7 staff to over 45, and more than 10x in revenue. With a core focus on providing phenomenal business news the company sets its sights on growing further and into other markets.
